C.R. Anthony Co. chairman Bob Anthony on Tuesday did not just become the first Republican to win election to the state Corporation Commission in 60 years.  He also apparently became Oklahoma's all-time top Republican vote-getter in any statewide race other than a presidential race.

Based on all Oklahoma precincts reporting unofficial returns, Anthony's 604,044 votes, or 53 percent of the total statewide, compared with 532,631 votes, or 47 percent, for his Democratic opponent, state Rep. Charlie Morgan of Prague.

State Election Board officials confirmed Wednesday that Anthony's total surpasses Don Nickles' previous record Republican total of 587,252 votes collected in his successful 1980 U.S. Senate race.

Anthony's total also compares with the 431,762 votes that elected Henry Bellmon as governor in 1986.
